LinkedIn Isn't Optional. Here's the Data to Prove It

Someone asked me the other day why I care so much about LinkedIn.

Not in a curious way. In an “isn’t it just a job board?” way.

And I had to take a breath. Because this is one of those questions where the short answer sounds like an overreaction and the long answer sounds like a TED Talk, and neither one feels great at 2 PM on a Wednesday.

But here’s the thing.

Why Does LinkedIn Matter If You’re Not in Sales?

LinkedIn is the ONE place where everyone checks you out. Everyone.

Not just recruiters. Not just salespeople. Not just the “I post every day and call myself a thought leader” crowd.

Your future clients. Your potential business partners. The event organizer deciding whether to put you on a panel. The investor Googling your name after your pitch. The hiring manager who already has your resume but wants to know who you actually are. Your future manager who wants to make sure what you said in that interview is backed up online.

They’re all going to the same place.

LinkedIn has a trust factor of 81.55 out of 100 in B2B. Nearly 30 points higher than YouTube and Facebook. That’s from the Sagefrog B2B Trusted Brands Report. And it’s been ranked the #1 most trusted social platform year after year by eMarketer’s Digital Trust Benchmark.

(Read that again. Thirty points.)

No other social platform comes close. Not Instagram. Not X. Not the platform formerly known as the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The “I’m Not Really on LinkedIn” Delusion

Here’s where people trip up.

They think “being on LinkedIn” means posting, engaging, building an audience. And if they’re not doing those things, they figure it doesn’t apply to them.

It does.

You have a LinkedIn profile. You created one at some point — maybe five years ago, maybe ten — and it’s sitting there right now with your old job title, a headshot from a conference in 2019, and an About section that reads like a cover letter you wrote in a hurry.

And people are finding it.

The issue?

🔹 The majority of B2B buyers check your LinkedIn before they ever take a meeting. 🔹 LinkedIn-sourced leads convert at a 33% higher rate than leads from other social platforms. 🔹 4 out of 5 LinkedIn members are people who drive business decisions.

That’s not a social media platform. That’s a vetting tool. And you’re being vetted whether you’re “active” or not.

It’s Not Just B2B. It’s Everyone With a Professional Pulse.

I hear this one a lot: “But I’m not in B2B sales.”

Cool. Neither is the career professional who just got passed over for a promotion she was perfect for. Partly because the person who got it had a LinkedIn profile that told a story, and hers said “Experienced professional seeking new opportunities.”

Neither is the consultant whose referral partner sent a warm introduction to a potential client, and when that client looked her up on LinkedIn, she looked like she hadn’t updated her profile since Obama’s second term.

Neither is the speaker who got invited to pitch for a keynote, nailed the call, and then lost the gig to someone whose LinkedIn backed up everything they said on the phone.

🔹 Nearly 9 in 10 recruiters say LinkedIn is the most effective platform for evaluating candidates.

Not finding them. Evaluating them.

This isn’t about B2B. This isn’t about sales. This is about the fact that LinkedIn is the centralized location where professionals confirm who you are and whether you’re credible. It’s the ONE place where your curated professional story lives.

🔹 LinkedIn is 277% more effective for lead generation than Facebook and Twitter combined. That’s not an opinion — that’s HubSpot data.

And the wildest part? It’s FREE to create a kick-ass profile that closes deals.

So the Question Isn’t Whether to Have a LinkedIn Profile

You already have one. It’s already being found. People are already forming impressions based on what’s there.

The only question is whether the profile that exists is doing the job.

Is it telling the right story? Is it speaking to the people you actually want to reach? Is it positioning you as the authority you are? Or is it a digital resume collecting dust?

(Pro tip: It should never be treated like a digital resume, and I really wish so-called experts stopped referring to it like that.)

Because here’s what I’ve learned from rebuilding hundreds of profiles: the folks who invest in getting this right don’t just get a better profile. They get speaking gigs before the profile is even finished. They get connection requests from people who’ve been in the same room for years but never reached out. They launch businesses with no website because their LinkedIn IS the website.

(The results from the folks I’ve worked with? That’s a whole other post. Stay tuned.)

The Door Is Closing

The Optimize Lab — our founding cohort — starts October 8th. Twelve seats. Six weeks of live sessions where we rebuild your profile together, using the same methodology I use with my private clients.

The founding price is $1,997. It goes up after this cohort.

Cart closes October 6th. As in, Monday.

This isn’t a countdown-timer situation. It’s a “this is the last time I’m saying this” situation. The case for LinkedIn has been made — by the data, by the results, by the fact that people are looking you up right now and making decisions based on what they find.

The question is whether you’re going to do something about it.
